Fast indexing and updating method for moving objects on road networks

Fast updates in spatial databases become a crucial issue in several application domains, such as LBS (Location Based Service). In particular, moving objects with frequent updates on their positions require a fast update mechanism of spatial database system. Conventional indexing methods have difficulties in providing efficient updating mechanism. In this paper, we propose a new method for the indexing of the current positions of moving objects on road network. Our method significantly improves not only the update mechanism but also the performance of query processing. The only constraint of our method is that the moving objects should be on roads, but we expect that most applications of moving objects satisfy this condition. We provide a performance analysis to improve indexing and update performance of our method. From experiments, we observe that it shows a very good indexing and query processing performance as well as fast updates.
